Photographer’s Practical Budget Carry - Mike (@eagleedc)

Often overlooked are the more practical, mundane items a photographer may need to carry while out on a shoot or scouting out a scene. Mike — better known as @eagleedc on Instagram — gives us a taste of what it’s like to be out in the field and what he keeps with him at all times.

I’m a photographer/filmmaker so many of these items play a part in my day-to-day tasks. I’ve always carried some form of a knife and wallet, but within the last year or so I’ve discovered the whole world of EDC.

This knife in particular is the Elementum which originally had Jade G10 scales, but the previous owner had them dyed into a grey color which I really enjoy. The KeyBar Jr. is just right, and the Griffin pocket tool is great for taking tripod plates on and off when I’m on a shoot.

The FireFlies flashlight was a new pickup this summer. It’s the perfect size/weight/output ratio for me. I try to keep the Field Notes in my camera bag so that I can make notes when I’m out on a shoot or gather someone’s contact info, whatever I need it for it’s there.

My wallet is the biggest pain right now. I enjoy the minimalist wallets with room for cash and cards, but this generic one is just super cheap and not holding up well. Any suggestions for something small that can still carry cash?

I'd like a click pen that can take G2 refills if such a thing exists, and even more, I'd like to stay under $50 since I have a history of misplacing my EDC pieces in my hectic lifestyle and would really hate to lose an expensive pen. which seems to be a pretty narrow assortment of pens out there, but then again I'm not very familiar with the pen world. Any ideas?

Taylor: My best recommendation for a minimalist wallet that still holds cash well is the Open Sea Leather Topsider or Houbei 2.0 (use code BESTDAMN to get 10% off). You can get them totally customized or snag the Topsider as a same-day shipper that is pre-made with a preset configuration. The Topsider carries up to 10 cards and 25 unfolded bills.

As for a click pen that takes G2 refills under $50, I’d suggest the Everyman Grafton pen. It’s an aluminum click pen that comes in a number of colors — gold, silver, red, black, gunmetal, etc. — for just $40.
