Open Sea Leather: Veteran-Made Minimalist Wallets

Founded in 2015 by Michael Bluth, a veteran of the US Navy, Open Sea Leather began its days as Das Offene Meer. Using inspiration from his family history and the beautiful creative outlet that is the open sea, he has sewn himself as a mainstay in any respectable EDC for his unique and functional takes on wallet design, lending to ergonomic, intuitive, and beautiful pieces of work.

The Gun Deck

First up in the spotlight is the Gun Deck wallet. While the name might be a red herring, its simple design is truly a plus. Using Open Sea’s signature tuck closure and two pockets, it can fit up to 10 cards and some halved US dollar bills, all while looking good doing it.

The Topsider

The next iteration of the tuck closure wallets from Open Sea is the Topsider. The Topsider is functionally similar to the Gun Deck but the Topsider has a vertical orientation instead of horizontal. The vertical orientation comes with one major advantage: it can hold standard US bills, unfolded. Simply tuck them into the rear pocket close the wallet — the bills fold with the wallet flap.

It can still hold up to 10 credit cards and some cash, or as many as 25 bills and 6 cards at one time.

Houbei 2.0

The newest creation by Open Sea is the Houbei 2.0. The Houbei 2.0 builds on the tried and true form factor of the Topsider by adding an additional internal and external pockets. The original Houbei featured a two-stitch design, whereas the Houbei 2.0 only has a single stitch along the left side, like the Topsider. Fewer stitches means fewer points of failure.

This additional flap also comes with the added benefit of mixing things up with colors. Not only can you choose the primary leather and stitch colors, but you can also choose a secondary leather color. The Houbei 2.0 can also fit up to 20 bills and 8 cards at one time, all within 4 strong pockets.
